Art Video Institute Ljubljana is a non-profit organisation engaged in production, post-production and distribution. Conceived by media theorist, art critic and curator Marina Gržinić and art historian and artist Aina Šmid, the Institute conceives projects that deal with the exposition of culture and visualisation and explore the fields of science and culture, often juxtaposing images of intimacy, sex, mass culture and history. The tandem has presented and exhibited their video works and video installations in more than 100 video festivals around the world and have received several major awards for their video productions.

Background

Marina Gržinić and Aina Šmid have worked together since 1982. Before establishing the Art Video Institute they had a punk band and were involved in performance art. They have collaborated in more than 40 video art projects, made a short 16mm film and created numerous video and media installations; independently they have also directed several video documentaries and television productions.

In 1997 they realised an interactive CD-ROM for ZKM, Karlsruhe, and were presented in the fourth edition of the Artintact CD-ROM magazine, which focuses on interactive media art and is presented by the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe. On the Flies of The Market Place (1999) received first prize at the Nuremberg Video Festival in Germany (2000).
