For designers and design enthusiasts, Slovene organisations offer a broad spectrum of design events throughout the year that we can categorise as festivals. The oldest and most prominent among them is the Biennial of Design (BIO), established in 1963. All of the remaining events/festivals were established after Slovenia proclaimed its independence, with the majority of them being founded since 2001.

The festivals can be roughly divided into two types: those geared more or less strictly towards advertising design and visual communication (Slovene Advertising Festival (SOF), Intercontinental Advertising CUP, Golden Drum Advertising Festival of New Europe, Magdalena International Festival of Creative Communication, Memefest - International Festival of Radical Communication) and those that are broader in the types of design they represent, covering among them industrial, fashion, product design, and even some architecture and interior design, depending upon the annual focus (Biennial of Design (BIO), Biennial of Slovene Visual Communications, International Design Event, Month of Design). The Poster Festival Ljubljana is the only one dedicated to a singular format, with the focus on socio-politically relevant posters designed by young designers under the age of 35.

Together, these festivals offer people working in the so-called Creative Industries plenty of opportunities to present their work among their peers and gain validation for their creative endeavours as well as to collaborate and network with others in their fields. Awards are also bestowed on several of the festivals, among them the Brumen Award and Brumen Grand Prix, bestowed at the Biennial of Slovene Visual Communications, the Magdalena Golden Bra Award at the Magdalena International Festival of Creative Communication and the BIO Gold Medal and others which, until 2014, were awarded to the best works at the Biennial of Design (BIO).

The events which are open to international designers as juried competitions include Memefest - International Festival of Radical Communication, Magdalena International Festival of Creative Communication, Poster Festival Ljubljana, Intercontinental Advertising CUP, Golden Drum Advertising Festival of New Europe, International Design Event, Biennial of Design (BIO). Events that highlight Slovene design professionals include Biennial of Slovene Visual Communications and the Slovene Advertising Festival (SOF).

The majority of the design festivals and events cluster in the months from September to November, so foreigners travelling to Slovenia in that period have a good probability of catching more than one.
