The European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY) was founded in 1970 as a non-profit organisation in order to develop and revive the musical education and promotion of musical talents in the pre-professional arena at a European level. Today the EMCY network presents more than 50 national and international music competitions for children and young musicians from 25 countries. Music competitions promote new musical talents and facilitate the exchange of pedagogical, organisational, practical and musical know-how.

For prizewinners of national EMCY competitions, the European Music Prize for Youth is organised every year in another European country, and outstanding prize winners perform in EuroRadio Youth Concerts which are organised in co-operation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and various radio stations in Europe. European Concert Tours (both with and without an orchestra) are also organised for prizewinners of national and international EMCY competitions - the Euro Debut Tour being a special example for such a tour. In European interpretation and chamber music courses, prizewinners are trained by experienced musicians and are introduced to music of all epochs and various cultural areas. Each country organises at least one international competition.

In Ljubljana the European Young Organists Competition has taken place every three years since 1989. In 1992 the Slovene organisation Commission for Music and Ballet Competitions (TEMSIG) became a member of EMCY.
