The Institute of Civilisation and Culture (ICK) was founded in 1997 as an independent institute supporting research, educational, publishing, and consulting activities in a range of areas spanning human rights, ecology, and EU integration as well as media, cultural, education and scientific policies.

The institute is organised into four departments: the Department for the Media and the Public; the Department of Identity and Culture; the Department of Safety and Freedom; and the Department for Ecology and Environment. The institute's project Slavic@ aims to facilitate a dialogue between individuals interested in Slavic ethnic and cultural heritage and consolidate them into a Pan-Slavic network. The institute's section ICK films produce and promote documentary content that steps forth into new and critical territories.

Areas of research

Researchers at the institute pursue the larger issues of civilisation and culture as well as investigate the social, civil, urban, and cultural facets of human existence (historical demographics; social stratification; migration/transitional demographics; linguistic differences; national education and science policies and their role in world development; the social impact of new technologies). The institute publishes research monographs and special collections of papers.
