Originally launched as a section of the journal ''[[Problemi Journal|Problemi]]'' called ''Problemi-Literatura'', ''[[Literatura]]'' journal became autonomous in [[established::1989]] with the establishment of the literary artistic association [[LUD Literatura]]. Since 1993, it has appeared monthly. Its editorial emphasis is on the presentation and commentary of new developments in contemporary Slovene as well as world literature. 
Almost three hundred issues in nearly two hundred volumes of the magazine have been published in almost 25 years. In recent years, it has been published in eight volumes, each with four single and double issues per year.

== Contents ==

The sections in the journal include: Poetry, Prose, Encyclopaedia of Living Writers (essays and theory), Interview, The Last Course (translation of new forms and contents), Translation, Revisor (critical texts on ideological models), Front Line and Marginal Notes (critiques). Every year, a thematic section of texts is dedicated to a certain author (for example, Derrida, Deleuze, Perec, Ashbery, de Man) or genre (science fiction, crime novels) or issue (such as women's writing, erotic literature, literature and esoterica, new historicism). 

The 50th-anniversary issue of ''Literatura'' presented contributions to Slovene literature by 11 authors, and an analysis of the state of Slovene literature and its perspectives.

The year 2019 marked the thirtieth anniversary of the beginning of its independent publishing; in order to celebrate, they launched a competition for an essay on new Slovene literature.
