Published twice a year, in June and December, by the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, the journal Urbani izziv (The Urban Challenge) began publication in 1989. It is the successor to the Informacijski bilten Urbanističnega inštituta SRS (Informational Bulletin of the Urban Institute of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia), which was published from 1977 to 1984.

Urbani izziv offers professional and scientific considerations of spatial planning issues in Slovenia and abroad. The magazine's multidisciplinary approach opens out onto a wide variety of fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, sociology, and economics. A broad range of topics bearing on spatial issues is covered: urban planning, municipal management, demographic studies, housing issues, and environmental planning, to name a few.

All contributions are published in Slovenian and English.

Urbani izziv is freely available to read and use (provided authors and sources are properly cited) through a Creative Commons BY license. Current and past issues are available on the journal's website, and article abstracts are available in relevant bibliographical databases and digital libraries.

Content

Each issue of Urbani izziv consists of two parts: the first, larger part features scientific articles and articles that present methods and techniques. The second, shorter part contains reviews and summaries of books, projects, events, conferences, projects, etc.

Prior to 2008, each issue was focused on a theme. An issue of the journal published jointly in 1995 with the Faculty of the Built of the Environment University of Central England, Birmingham, dealt with the theme of Housing. Other themes covered in this period include physical planning, water and the city, the innovative city and countryside management.
