Avla NLB Gallery was established in 1971 in the entrance hall of the headquarters of the largest Slovene bank – Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB), in the city centre of Ljubljana, close to the Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre. The NLB has purchased thousands of high-quality art works which now form the Nova Ljubljanska banka (NLB) Art Collection, established in 1999.

Programme

The gallery is regularly presenting works from the NLB art collection (originally curated by Stane Bernik) focusing on its different aspects including graphic arts, painting, sculpture, works by younger artists etc. In preparation of these exhibitions the gallery often collaborates with other Slovenian institutions, most prominently with the International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana.

Other temporary exhibitions present current works in the field of visual communications, covering graphic design, illustration, and photography. From 2000 to 2014 these temporary exhibitions have been organised by Emzin Institute of Creative Production.

Recent photography exhibitions have presented a Milčo Mančevski exhibit The Street, and the photographs of Tošo Dabac and Franco Pinna; illustration exhibitions have shown the work of Radovan Jenko, Jugoslav Vlahović, Luba Lukova, and ZEK Crew; and design exhibitions have presented a whole range of eminent authors and groups, including Luc(as) de Groot, Philippe Apeloig, Seymour Chwast, Paula Scher, April Greiman, Studio Najbrt, Niklaus Troxler, Piter Bankov and studio DesignDepot and Leonardo Sonnoli.

A frequent partner of AVLA Gallery is Ljubljana Jazz Festival with the gallery annually exhibiting jazz photography including works by Edi Šelhaus and Caroline Forbes as well selections of jazz posters, most recently an exhibition of all the posters of the Ljubljana Jazz Festival on the occasion of the festival's 60th anniversary.

The gallery cooperates regularly with organisations and artists in the USA, France, the Netherlands, Poland, and Italy. Recent international exhibitions have included Polish Film Posters, Images of Jazz on Polish Posters and an exhibition of photography, paintings and illustrations of the Winter&Winter Publishing House.
