Matej Kučina founded BRUTO landscape architecture studio in 2004. The studio engages in the design and planning of urban and natural landscapes in all areas and standards of landscape design, for different sizes and types of programme and for all types of client. BRUTO's work includes interiors, gardens and terraces, public places and urban areas, public parks, graveyards and memorial parks, corporate landscapes, industrial and infrastructural landscapes, water landscapes, protected and historical landscapes and natural and cultural landscapes.


After graduating from the Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Ljubljana in 1995, Matej Kučina undertook further study in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University, USA, and in 1996 he became a collaborator in the office of P Walker, W Johnson and Partners, Berkeley, USA. In 2002 he co-founded Scapelab, a laboratory for spacial operations, with architect Marko Studen.

BRUTO has won numerous awards for its work. Awarded projects include: Bathing Place Radovljica (2nd Prize) and Zagorje ob Savi Public Park (3rd Prize) in 1997; Stari gasilski dom area, Grosuplje (2nd Prize) and Children's Cemetery Ljubljana (2nd Prize) in 1998; Kamenščnica Sports-Recreational Area (1st Prize with Enota Architects), Urban Park Maribor (1st Prize), Fountain Park, Radenci (2nd Prize) and Housing Tacenski dvor (2nd Prize, with SADAR + VUGA Architects) in 1999; Čufar square, Jesenice (1st Prize) and Koseze Pond, Ljubljana (2nd Prize) in 2000; Obrežje International Border Crossing (1st Prize with Enota Architects) in 2001; Ravne na Koroškem Library (2nd Prize with SADAR + VUGA Architects) in 2002; Arrangement of the Concealed Burial Places of Post-war Victims (Special Jury Award) in 2003; Church of Pilgrimage, Ptujska gora (1st Prize) in 2004; and Three Academies, Ljubljana (2nd Prize with Scapelab) and Housing, Brdo (1st Prize, with Dekleva Gregorič Arhitekti) in 2005.
