BRUTO landscape architecture studio was founded by Matej Kučina in 2004. The studio prides itself on a holistic, multidisciplinary approach that emphasises the role of space in site-specific designs that achieve both visual appeal and everyday functionality. BRUTO's work covers a broad range of indoor and outdoor spaces, including public parks and recreation areas, memorial sites, retail spaces and infrastructure projects.

Background

After graduating from the Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Ljubljana in 1995, Matej Kučina undertook further studies in landscape architecture and environmental planning at Utah State University in the United States. In 1996 he worked in the office of P Walker, W Johnson and Partners in Berkeley, California. In 2002 he co-founded Scapelab, a laboratory for spacial operations, with architect Marko Studen.

Projects

Bruto landscape architecture's work includes several highly visible projects at locations throughout Slovenia: outdoor areas at the BTC shopping centre in Ljubljana (2016), Orhidelia Wellness Centre in Podčetrtek (2009), the walkway to Bled Castle (2011), the Markovec tunnel and surrounding area on the highway to Koper (2015), and the extensive renovation of Čufar Square, the main square in Jesenice (2003).

The studio's work also features an ongoing, enumerated series of residential landscape projects for private clients.

Awards

BRUTO landscape architecture received the Golden Pencil Award in two categories in 2010: for the Šentvid Park in Ljubljana (public space category) and for the Orhidelia Wellness Centre (public building category). Another hotel project in Podčetrtek, Hotel Sotelia, received the highest honours available to Slovenian architects when it was completed in 2006: the Golden Pencil Award, the Piranesi Award and the Plečnik Award.
