Seviqc

Today, the Seviqc Festival is synonymous with early music in Slovenia. Over four decades, it has solidified its reputation both domestically and internationally. At home, it is considered a crucial national development programme and one of the most significant cultural events. Globally, it is renowned as an exceptional and highly esteemed event, garnering acclaim from artists, producers, critics, the business world, and music enthusiasts alike.

The Seviqc festival exclusively features world-class artists performing top-tier programmes of the highest quality. The festival places great emphasis on cultivating the local early music scene and fostering connections between Slovenian and international musicians. Through diverse programmes sections, it offers a comprehensive exploration of European and world musical heritage from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. Emphasizing the living nature of art, as reflected in the festival’s motto “SEmper VIva Quam Creata” or “always alive as created,” the Seviqc programme is meticulously crafted according to historical performance practices and exclusively presented in Slovenian cultural heritage sites.

Early music instruments showcased at the European Day of Early Music event, held annually on 21 March at the National Museum of Slovenia. Organized by Ars Ramovš, the event was part of the Seviqc festival in 2013.  

Panč Festival

Panč Festival is an international stand-up comedy festival which was established in 2008 in Ljubljana by the Kurz Rock Vibe crew, that later become Ceh za smeh (Association of Laugh). This several-day-long event usually takes place at the Ljubljana Castle courtyard and is the central stand-up occasion in Slovenia. It has hosted most, if not all, of the leading Slovene performers from this field as well as a strong international line-up, with the guests being invited from all over the world. The name of the festival is a derivative of the term punchline, which connotes a joke's climax.

Since 2010, in addition to the main summer event, a winter edition of the festival has also been taking place, a slightly more low-key evening called Zimski Panč (Winter Panč). Held at different Ljubljana venues like Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture, Cvetličarna, and the Festival Hall, it was for a time also simultaneously organised in Maribor at Narodni dom Maribor. The festival also had an over the border venture in Zagreb, Croatia, where a sister event, Pančić, was organised.

Pisana Loka Festival

Pisana Loka is a local summer festival taking place at various locations in Škofja Loka in August. At first a rather modest endeavour, it began in 2008 and has since grown into an annual event of ten packed days, encompassing music, theatre, urban sports, stand-up comedy, a children's programme, film screenings and more. The name of the festival means Colourful Loka, a bit of an archaic way of calling Škofja Loka when alluding to the charms of the town.

The festival locations are numerous, among them Sokolski dom Cultural Centre, Loka Castle, the summer garden of various local bars, some smaller squares and the main square of the old city centre (one of the best-preserved medieval squares in Slovenia).

  The 6th international PrintMaking Biennial Čačak will be hosting Slovenia as the main guest country in the scope of the FOCUS-SLOVENIA project. The featured Slovene artists are the Laibach group, Marko Šajn, David Kucler, Mitja Stanek, Neža Jurman, Mladen Stropnik, Oliver Pilić, and Teodor Lovrenčić. The biennial is supported by Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Belgrade.

It is owned by the Military Museum of Slovenian Armed Forces and was transferred to the Park of Military History Pivka only a few months after the action. The pink paint was removed.

Overview

Fields of Experimental Music in Slovenia

Let's take a ride on the term experimental music, which currently mainly defines certain more fringe musical practices, across the expanses of various musical plains, styles and genres. We can apply this (overly) broad term to designate the varied creative simmering in certain segments of the present-day Slovenian music scene. A scene that spans the realms of electro-acoustic music, musique concrète, experimental music in the context of modern classical music, free improvisation, experimental electronic music and sound art as well as their associated present-day trends. This scene is diverse and exceptionally agile. It has developed a strong infrastructure for itself (festivals, concert series, labels, international networks) and exists in the space between self-organising and DIY models and institutional environments.
