The DANS Arhitekti architectural studio was founded in 2004 by Miha Dešman, Katarina Pirkmajer Dešman, Eva Fišer Berlot, Rok Bogataj, and Vlatka Ljubanović, a collective of architects who had formerly collaborated on various projects. Today their practice pays special attention to the social dimension. DANS projects thus focus on schools, kindergartens, hospitals, and buildings for people with special needs.

Some of the recent work includes the centre for elderly people Hospic, a children's department and occupational therapy space at the Institute for Rehabilitation, and the footbridge across the Ljubljanica River at Špica – all in Ljubljana.

The DANS Arhitekti has successfully entered several competitions. Their proposal for the Don Bosco Centre in Maribor won first prize in 2007. The Minimal Housing Units Pipanova in Ljubljana is a result of the invited competition in 2007 as well. Both projects are currently in progress.

Background

Architects Katarina Pirkmajer and Miha Dešman previously worked at the Atelje Dešman-Pirkmajer studio. Both studied at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana with Professor Marjan Mušič before undertaking additional studies at the Institute for Urbanism and Architecture in Venice. They are members of the DESSA Architecture Centre and have also been engaged as independent architects. Their most prominent projects include plans for schools, public and cultural buildings in Ljubljana and surrounding areas, for which they have won several awards – Piranesi Award in 1990, and the nomination for the Plečnik medal in 2004, among others.

Miha Dešman has also been engaged in graphic design (book design) and writes about architecture in his capacity as Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Architects' Bulletin (ab). He is actively engaged in the work of the Architects' Society of Ljubljana (DAL) and the Union of Slovene Architects' Societies.
