The [[Department of Archaeology Library, University of Ljubljana]] includes a wide range of publications focusing on the theoretical side of the subject and the scientific disciplines employed in archaeology (including as well as excavation techniques, the science of materials and their conservation). It also includes many scholarly journals.

The first beginnings of this reference library date back to [[established::1923]], when the Archaeological Seminar was established at the [[University of Ljubljana]]. Its founding collection was based on purchasing the collection from the private library of archaeologist Luka Jelić from Zagreb.

After the Second World War the first structural changes were made. An inventory was taken and the international exchange of books began. In 1961 the library moved to the head unit of the Faculty of Arts on Aškerčeva Street, later in 1991, it was moved to its current location on Zavetiška Street. 

In the late 1980s a part of the collection was categorised in the computer base, from 1999 the categorisation is done by [[COBISS - Slovene Virtual Library]].  From 1996 the library functions as a unit of the [[Faculty of Arts Central Humanities Library, University of Ljubljana]]. Currently the collection has around 26,000 units and is the third largest library for the field of archaeology in Slovenia. The largest collection of around 50,000 units is held by the [[Institute of Archaeology]] at the [[Scientific Research Centre (ZRC SAZU), Slovene Academy of Science and Arts]].  

The library holds various subscriptions to archaeological journals and reference magazine from 38 countries around the world. Access to some of the electronic editions of these journals are possible at the computers in the library's reading room. Although the library functions mainly as a reading room, library materials may be borrowed over the weekend, which assures that research materials are available every working day.
