In 1919, when the Faculty of Arts was founded at the University of Ljubljana, the curriculum already included a "Seminar on Ethnography". Officially the lectures on Ethnology and Ethnography began in the academic year 1940–1941. The first fully-appointed professor was the Director of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum, Niko Zupanič. The main topics of Professor Zupanič's research were the earliest history and ethnogenesis of the Balkan, which were reflected in the first issues of the Etnolog (Ethnologist) Journal, which he founded and edited.
After the Second World War and the implementation of the physical anthropology and ethnology of non-European cultures a new generation of ethnologists has shifted the discipline in terms of its methodology, subject, and organisation. The research of urban ethnology and worker's culture was introduced. In the 1980s various new themes were introduced with the appointment of new professors and teachers that broadened the concepts of ethnology and anthropology.
In 1990 the Department was renamed into the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, and various anthropological subjects again became part of the curriculum. Since 1998, Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology have been an independent study programme at the Faculty of Arts.
From 1999 the department publishes its own monograph collection from the field of ethnology and cultural anthropology entitled the Zupanič Library (33 volumes had been published by 2010). The department also publishes a collection of student papers entitled Etno je fletno [Ethno Rules]. More information about the publications can be found at the homepage of the Department.
The Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology is very active in the field of international research cooperation and student exchange. Since 2001 it has engaged in international student, teacher and staff exchanges within the ERASMUS programme and CEEPUS networks. Students have the opportunity to perform a part of their studies at more than 20 partner departments all over Europe (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden).
Researchers in the department have been involved in several bilateral research projects (with partners from Portugal, Romania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, etc.) and in research projects from the 6th EU Framework (Eumon; Ramses) and Alpha (EU research collaboration with Latin America).
The Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology organises many international meetings and symposiums. Since 1994 it has organized annual Mediterranean Ethnological Summer School/Symposium. In 2008 it organized the largest Anthropological conference in Europe in collaboration with EASA (European Association of Social Anthropologists). In 2010, in honour of the department's 70th Anniversary, the conference entitled Beyond Essentialisms – Challenges of Anthropology in the 21st Century took place.

It encourages international cultural exchange in the fields of arts, culture and heritage. The portal and its content is owned and funded by the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan and developed by Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.
