Archival article

The contemporary arts venue Ex-garage is run by the Son:DA artistic tandem in a former garage in Maribor. In a semi-public but conceptually well defined space son:DA organises an international programme of small-scale exhibitions, screenings, discussions, and 45-minutes lectures, supported by the son:DA Foundation, the Municipality of Maribor and the Slovene Ministry of Culture.

Since 2007 the venue has featured solo exhibitions by Marko A. Kovačič, the Belgrade group E++ Tatoos, Borjana Venzislavova, Iskra Blagoeva, Marko Batista, Kamen Sotyanov, and others, as well as group exhibitions such as the Polution exhibition in 2009, made in collaboration with the Open Studio for Contemporary Ceramics and Aleksandra Saška Gruden.

Background

Established in 2004, the Garage for Art Photography (gUF) at Pekarna Cultural Centre in Maribor was an initiative and curatorial project of contemporary arts producer and artistic tandem Son:DA and Primož Bizjak. In 2004 and 2005 the former garage at Pekarna became a space for solo exhibitions of photographic work by art photographers Primož Bizjak, Miloš Srdić, Nejc Saje, Damjan Kocjančič, Gian-Luca Faccio, and Borut Peterlin, and by female photographers Magda Tothova, Christine Tsilidis, Janja Glogovac, ECLIPSE, Manca Juvan and Rita Nowak. In 2006 the gUF published two books entitled the male/the female positions at gUF, which presented a photo documentation of the gUF exhibitions.

In 2007 the programme moved to the Ex-garage venue at Gregorčičeva Street and abandoned the focus on photography.
