Established in 1957 to advance the discipline of industrial design at the international level, ICSID is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation supported by professional, promotional, educational, associate and corporate member societies on all continents. Through its members, the direct audience of ICSID consists of approximately 150,000 professionals who, in turn, have an effective influence over tenfold more working in and with the design profession. The ICSID Network consists of an Executive Board, an Advisory Senate, Regional Advisers, Member Societies and affiliated organisations. These bodies work together in the areas of professional practice, education, promotion and development to enhance both the ways designers work and the contexts within which they practice; this is ICSID's mission. Today ICSID facilitates co-operation and interaction among its 152 member societies in 53 countries, providing a global force through which independent organisations can combine resources and efforts. ICSID works in co-operation with its Member Societies to facilitate workshops, seminars, conferences, exhibitions and congresses about design. In order to foster communication and interaction, ICSID produces various publications, including directories, newsletters, events calendars, guidelines, the 'Hall of Fame' book and papers related to ongoing ICSID projects.

ICSID’s Slovene members are the Slovene Designers Society, and the Biennial of Industrial Design (BIO) at Architecture Museum in Ljubljana.
