Originating in 1953 with Ljubljana's oldest festival, the Ljubljana Festival, the Festival Ljubljana Public Institute was established in 1954 by the Municipality of Ljubljana. Apart from its continued central duty of organising the annual festival, the institute organises, or takes part in organising, numerous other projects that contribute to the cultural image of the capital. Other events within its remit include the event Slovene Music Days, the Young Virtuosi music programme, the Križanke International Art Colony, and the Festive December programme, in which short concerts are given by students of the Ljubljana music school.

The Križanke architectural complex, designed in 1952 especially for the Ljubljana Festival by renowned architect Jože Plečnik, is managed by the institute.

International networking

Festival Ljubljana is a member of both the European Festivals Association (EFA) and the International Society for the Performing Arts Foundation (ISPA).

Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.8, performed by the Zagreb and Slovene Philharmonic Orchestras together with 21 Croatian and Slovene choirs. The concert took place in 2011 on the square in front of the Slovene Philharmonic as the opening event of the Festival Ljubljana.
