Along with the Photon Gallery, the Galerija Fotografija ("Photography Gallery") is one of two private galleries specialised in photography in Ljubljana. Established in 2003 and located in the first floor of the medieval house in the old Ljubljana centre, the gallery popularises high-quality photography of established Slovene and international authors. In addition to up to 8 exhibitions annually the gallery also organises lectures, screenings of master photographers, and project presentations. The gallery entered the international art market in 2009, participating in the Viennafair, and since 2010 in the Paris Photo fair. Since 2005 the Galerija Fotografija annually holds at least one charity auction.

Programme

Solo exhibitions

The recent programme has been dedicated mostly to presenting international established artists such as Helmut Newton, Paul Serrada, Angelika Sher, Roger Ballen, Wilhelm Heiliger, and Sarah Moon. In 2009 the exhibition of American photographer Sheila Metzner (who works also for numerous magazines such as Vanity Fair and Vogue, also for clients as Chanel, Victoria's Secret, Ralph Lauren) was prepared in cooperation with Emzin Institute of Creative Production.

Th gallery also features the works of Slovene authors. Those featured have included Tihomir Pintar, Žiga Koritnik, Bojan Radovič, Neca Falk, Marko Jamnik, Matjaž Krivic, Sibil Slejko, Jože Suhadolnik, Tomo Jeseničnik, Joco Žnidaršič, and Bojan Brecelj.

Group exhibitions

Galerija Fotografija also prepares curated group exhibitions. One of the first was the exhibition Today About Yesterday featuring the great names of Slovene photography such as Stojan Kerbler and Dragan Arrigler. In 2006 the most prominent international names of photography history were shown on the exhibition entitled Art & Photography (Archipenko, Chagall, Christo, Kandinsky, Matisse, Miró, Picasso, Rauschenberg, Soto, Vasarely, Warhol, Wesselman, Doisneau, Klein, Modotti, Newton, Taylor-Wood, Sieff, Wegman and some others).

In 2007 Marina Gržinić and Bojan Radovič (The House of Photography, Slovenia) curated the group exhibition Not-quite/not-right: histories, bodies and concepts in contemporary photography featuring works of Tomaž Gregorič, IRWIN, Jane Štravs, Aleksandra Vajd, and Hynek Alt. In the same year the gallery featured the exhibition of famous photographers who dedicated most of their professional interest to the subject of the nude and eroticism. Entitled Masters of Erotic Photography it presented the selection of the most typical works by Nobuyoshi Araki, Ralph Gibson, Nan Goldin, Helmut Newton, and Jeanloup Sieff.

Commercial activities

The Galerija Fotografija represents almost 40 artists, approximately half of them are established and promising Slovene photographers. At its very first attendance of an international art fair in 2009, the Galerija Fotografija presented two Slovene established photographers at Viennafair: the legend of the Slovene photography Stojan Kerbler and some decades younger photographer Boris Gaberščik who was also featured at the VU Gallery in Paris in 2012.

Online bookshop

The gallery's online bookshop offers numerous catalogues, photo related publications by Slovene publishing houses as well as some foreign publishers (a representative of the Steidl Verlag in Slovenia), posters, postcards and special editions.
