Established in 2006 by the actor Primož Ekart, Imaginarni Institute (meaning, "the imaginary") is a production house producing smaller-scale theatre performances, often co-productions with other Slovene theatres and institutions. The common thread running through Imaginarni's projects is telling stories based on real people and events and telling stories of people who are forced into the margins of society. Collaborating with renowned Slovene actors, directors, musicians, and designers, Imaginarni aims to address the viewer with universal stories, confronting him to find his own position toward complex societal problematics.

Programme

In the short time of its existence, Imaginarni has produced several resounding productions, either the first Slovene stagings of international dramatic texts or premières of Slovene dramatic texts.

In 2007, a very successful solo performance I Am My Own Wife [Poročena s seboj], a play by Doug Wright based on his conversations with German transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf who survived the Nazi and Communist regimes in East Berlin as a transvestite, premièred at Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre. The play starred and was directed by Primož Ekart.

Imaginarni and Bunker Institute co-produced the play The Swing [Gugalnica] (2007) by the young Slovene playwright Nejc Gazvoda, directed by the film director Janez Lapajne, which was also presented in the accompanying programme of the 2008 Week of Slovenian Drama. The performance Ella (2008), written by the German author Hebert Achternbusch, directed by Ekart, and co-produced by Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre, a story about a mentally disabled woman who is the object of physical and mental abuse because of her condition, was extremely well received by the critical audience. Also in 2008, Imaginarni, Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre, and City of Women International Festival of Contemporary Arts produced Jane Shepard's play Commencing [Zaciklani], a play about two women with different sexual orientations and their prejudices. Janez Starina received the Satyr for Best Actor at the 2009 Slovene Festival of Chamber Theatre (SKUP) for his role in the play Blackbird [Črni kos] by David Harrower, a co-production of Imaginarni and Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre.

Imaginarni co-produced with Ljubljana City Theatre (MGL) Gregor Fon's debut play Pooch, Pussy, and Poof [Pes, pizda in peder] (2010), directed by Primož Ekart, which was nominated for the Grum Award at the 2008 Week of Slovenian Drama. The staging of Venedict Yerofeyev's poem in prose Moscow-Petushki [Moskva-Petuški] (2010), co-produced by Familija, was presented at the Generations section of the 2010 Borštnik Theatre Festival.

Imaginarni often collaborates with the electronic music duo Silence.

International cooperation

Imaginarni is the associate partner of the project Global State of Art: theatre for development education, which is coordinated by Ekvilib Institute, Slovenia, and co-financed by the European Union.
