The Institute of Social Sciences forms part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The beginnings of the institute are linked to the Institute of Sociology and Philosophy, which was established in 1958 at the University of Ljubljana. In 1991 the Institute of Social Sciences was founded, and today it comprises 19 research centres, which initiate and conduct basic applied and developmental research projects in the social sciences. Together they effectively execute some 80 research projects annually, which are funded partly by the state and partly through contracts with like-minded organisations or institutions.

Research centres

The centres of the institute are: the Public Opinion and Mass Communication Research Centre (CPOMC), Centre for Cultural and Religious Studies (CRS), Centre for Political Science Research (CPSR), Centre for Spatial Sociology (CSS), Social Communication Research Centre (SCRC), International Relations Research Centre (IRRC), Centre for Policy Evaluation and Strategic Studies (CPESS), Defence Research Centre (DRC), Centre for Organisational and Human Resources Research (COHR), Centre for Social Studies of Science (CSSS), Centre for Methodology and Informatics (CMI), Centre for Theoretical Sociology (CTS), Centre for Welfare Studies (CWS), Centre for Social Psychology (CSP), Centre for Comparative Corporate and Development Studies (CCDS), Research Centre for the Terminology of Social Sciences and Journalism, Centre for Critical approach to Political Science, Centre for Analysis of Administrative-political Processes and Institutions, and the Centre for Anthropological Research (CAR).

Within the institute operates the Social Science Data Archive (ADP), a national resource centre. The archive collects data from academic research projects, government or commercial surveys. Their catalogue is available online.
