The Public Fund for Cultural Activities (often referred to as JSKD, an acronym of the name in Slovenian) covers all branches of amateur culture and art, and since 1977 it has engaged in various educational activities in the field of music. Its Music Programme offers information and consulting services, organises workshops and announces bids for project co-funding. It is divided into three sections: instrumental music, choral music, and historical music and dances.

Instrumental music

The activities of the instrumental music section of JSKD combine more than 250 amateur and professional musicians, bands and orchestras. Some of participating societies are internationally known and very successful. Several events and competitions such as the International Harmonica Festival, the Youth Bands Competition, and the International Contest of Brass Bands playing in the concert SLOVENIA 2012 are organised every year. The section also has its own publishing where it is possible to buy sheet music from a web library.

Choral music

The choral music section organises national competitions and concerts for choirs of different ages (Children's Festival Brinjevka, the National Competition for Children and Youth Choirs) and from different areas of Slovenia. The section's most important and best known competition is the Naša pesem Choir Competition in Maribor. The choral section issues several music collections for different choirs every year. It is also known for its magazine Naši zbori.

Historic music and dances

The historic music and dances section's mission is to present ancient instruments and dances. In summer it prepares different international workshops with various themes, in 2012 the workshop focuses on medieval strings, with the aim to teach participants the basic techniques of playing at the historical strings.
