Since 2003 the National Design Awards are presented annually at the festival Month of Design for significant contributions to Slovene design. The award has been founded by the Zavod Big. Recognising design excellence on the corporate, individual, and institutional level, the National Design Awards are granted in many categories from a number of fields, including interior and product design, architecture, technology and industrial design, fashion, and more. The main National Design Awards are Designer of the Year, Interior of the Year, Success Story, Timeless Slovenian Design, and Young Prospective Designers.


Awards

Designer of the Year

Designer of the Year 2009 was architect Damjan Uršič for his achievements in the field of furniture design. Previous award winners were Ernest Bevc (2008), Gigodesign (2007), Robert Lešnik (2006), Nina Mihovec (2005), Jure Miklavc (2004), and Bojan Klančar (2003).

Interior of the Year

In 2009 the Interior of the Year Award was bestowed to Dekleva Gregorič Arhitekti for the showroom Pertot in Trieste. In 2008 the School of Economics in Murska Sobota by Rok Benda, Primož Hočevar, and Mitja Zorc won the Interior of the Year 2008 title – the awarded building also received the Plečnik Award and the Golden Pencil Award.

Previous winners were Katjuša Kranjc and Rok Kuhar for the interior of the Ljubljana restaurant Cubo (2007), Vesna Vozlič Košir and Matej Vozlič from Atelje Vozlič with co-author Sandra Banf Škrbec for the interior of the Opera bar located near the SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana (2006), Lena and Tomaž Krušec from ARK Arhitektura Krušec for the Pilates Centre on Wolfova ulica in Ljubljana centre (2005), and Tomaž Mächtig for the interior of the office of the Maechtig-Vrhunc Arhitekti studio (2004).

Success Story

This special award of the Month of Design is granted to Slovene companies which incorporate quality design into their development strategies. In 2009 the title was bestowed to the company Akrapovič, a world renown manufacturer of motorcycle exhausts. The previous recipients of the Success Story prize were the companies Pipistrel, Intra lighting, Gorenje, Seaway, Tipro Keyboards, OLoOP Design, and Porcelain Catbriyur.

Timeless Slovenian Design

The collection Timeless Slovenian Design is aimed at presenting the most notable Slovene products by authors who have promoted design in practice at home and abroad. The collection has been expanding each year since 2004 and includes the following eye-catching designs: Cockta bottle (Sergej Pavlin, 1953), Rex chair (Niko Kralj, 1954), microphones MD9 (Marko Turk, 1963), kiosk K-67 (Saša Mächtig, 1966), Tomos ATX 50 motorcycle (Igor Rosa, 1983), Iskra ETA 85 telephone (Davorin Savnik, 1985), Gondola reclining chairs (Oskar Kogoj, 1969/70), Pobi battery charger (Marijan Gnamuš, 1973), and Universal electrical tools (Albert Kastelec, 1960 – 1970). In 2009 the chair Sistem L (Branko Uršič, 1981) was added to the collection.

Young Prospective Designers

Rising stars in the field of industrial, fashion and interior design have been honoured with the Young Prospective Designers Award since 2006.

Young Prospective Designers 2009 are Kaja Antlej, Nina Hercog, Mateja Martini (industrial design), Jan Hadžić, Uroš Rustja (interior design), Arijana Gadžijev, and Maja Ratajc (fashion design). The winners of previous years are industrial designers Miha Črtalič, Jaka Verbič (2008), Tilen Sepič, Marko Pavlinec (2007), David Cugelj, Luka Stepan (2006). The awardees in fashion design are Neli Štrukelj, Jure Purgaj (2008), Mateja Krofl, Barbara Šuštar (2007), Anja Mlakar, Maja Mehle (2006), and in interior design Rok Triller, ProstoRož (2008), Ajdin Bajrović, Jernej Hočevar (2007), Gašper Kociper, Ivana Antolovič (2006).

Aljoša Dekleva, Dean Lah, and Milan Tomac (Enota Architects) received the title Young Prospective Designers in 2003 along with Polona Matek, Nana Žargi, Barbara Nardoni, Iztok Lemajič, Damjan Marušič, and Nataša Koselj.
