The Slavic Society of Slovenia was founded in 1934 by a group of Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian language professors. Based at the Department of Slavistics of the University of Ljubljana, the society currently comprises more than 1,600 members and is further divided into regional societies. It is a professional non-profit organisation joining teachers of Slovenian and other Slavic languages.

The chief aims of the society are to stimulate scientific research into the Slovenian language and literature, publish scientific treatises, and foregrounds issues arising in the teaching profession. It organises the annual Slavistic Congress, symposia, meetings, lectures of Slovene and foreign scientists, presents awards to the best teachers of Slavic languages, grants subsidies for selected scientific monographs, and issues the following publications: Jezik in slovstvo [Language and Literature], Slavistična revija, Journal for Linguistics and Literary Sciences, and conference proceedings. In cooperation with the National Education Institute, it prepares a competition in the knowledge of the Slovenian language. The society is also active on Slovlit, a discussion forum for questions in the fields of literary theory, linguistics, Slovenian studies and humanities.
