The Slovenian Cultural Centre in Berlin (Slowenisches Kulturzentrum, or SKC Berlin) was set up in June 2016, it operates at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Berlin with the aim to become a central forum and a representative of Slovene cultural activities in Germany as well as a catalyst of new international projects.

Mission

The Slovenian Cultural Centre in Berlin is the second cultural centre Slovenia established abroad, the first one being the Slovenian Culture and Information Centre in Vienna (SKICA) founded in 2011. The centres are a joint project of the Slovenian Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The centre promotes Slovenian contemporary arts as well as cultural heritage, fosters cooperation efforts, and facilitates communication. It will create a synergy among Slovene organisations and creators and German cultural institutions, producers and venues.

Programme

The inauguration of the centre took place on 29 November 2016 when the German premiere of the When I was dead silent performance directed by Diego de Brea and performed by the Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana ensemble at the Babylon Cinema. The piece was inspired by the silent film Als ich tot war by Ernst Lubitsch. The copy of the director's earliest long feature made in 1916 was found at the Slovenian Cinematheque archive in 1994.

Consult the list of events co-organised by the Slovenian Cultural Centre in Berlin in the righ-hand column.

Arts & Culture Residency in Berlin

The Slovenian Cultural Centre in Berlin collaborates with the programme at the Slovene Arts & Culture Residency on Kastanienallee (Prenzlauer Berg) in Berlin. An annual open call of the Ministry of Culture invites Slovenian creators to apply for a month-long stay in the residence and travel costs, facilitating implementation of a number of Berlin projects.
