Background
TrajekT, Institute for Spatial Culture was established and registered as a private institute by architects Matevž Čelik, Anja Planišček, Matija Bevk from Bevk Perović Arhitekti, Domen Fras from Aparat, and Aljoša Dekleva and Tina Gregorič from Dekleva Gregorič Arhitekti. Later joined Maja Simoneti, landscape architect, and Peter Rauch from Studiobotas. In 2003 they launched a regularly updated website Trajekt.org to stimulate independent critical and research-oriented discussions about social, economic, and design phenomena related to spatial culture, visuality, design, and applied arts.
Later on they started to organise architectural exhibitions, seminars and workshops, including TraktaT, Architectural Jury in 2007 and 2008, a workshop on writing architectural critique as an analysis of the sociological, political, economic, environmental, and technical impacts of city development. The seminar consisted of lectures from leading theorists and writers on architecture and built environment – Adam Budak (Kunsthaus Graz, Austria), Stojan Pelko (Korpus Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Bojana Kunst (Maska Institute, Slovenia).
Exhibitions
The exhibition Architects France and Marta Ivanšek curated by Martina Malešič and Anja Planišček, and designed by Studiobotas opened at the Museum of Modern Art in spring 2010, giving insight into the work of two important Slovene architects who had a great impact on the development of Slovene architecture (including interior design) and society in the second half of the 20th century.
A design exhibition of occasional coins Nine Coins by Domen Fras and Maja B. Jančič from studio Aparat was shown at City Museum of Ljubljana in December 2009. Traffic kids, a photo exhibition by Peter Rauch was presented by TrajekT in January 2009.
The international seminar on wood architecture 3 x Wood, accompanied by an exhibition, was a result of cooperation between TrajekT and the Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana. It took place at the Faculty of Architecture in April 2007. The year before, the exhibition Architect Ilija Arnautović – Slovene Architecture in the Period of Socialism opened at the Museum of Modern Art.
The 50th anniversary of the launch of the chair Rex was celebrated with the opening of the exhibition Rexevolution at the Museum of Modern Art in October 2004. A month prior, the photo exhibition by Blaž Budja, focusing on Plečnik's Stadium, was open to public at the Kresija Gallery.
Research and online projects
Among other achievements is a review of Slovene architecture and urbanism presented as the online Architectural Guide, the project Evidence and Valorization of Slovene Modern Architecture in Years 1945–70, and a survey of degraded areas in Ljubljana Location.Info. The research project of POT / PATH as the largest public green space in Ljubljana was published in a book in 2006, confirming the importance of the recreational footpath around Ljubljana in the context of Ljubljana green space system, and revealing some of the possibilities for its improvement.
Awards
In 2004 Trajekt received the Plečnik Medal for cultural achievements on the field of architecture. The medal, presented by the Plečnik Fund, was granted to Anja Planišček also in 2007 for the exhibition Architect Ilija Arnautović – Slovene Architecture in the Period of Socialism.
International cooperation
Supported by the Culture 2007–2013 programme of the European Commission – EACEA, the project Unfinished Modernisations – Between Utopia and Pragmatism is a long-term collaborative platform of six organisations from four countries: TrajekT and Maribor Art Gallery (Slovenia), the Croatian Architects' Association and the Institute for Contemporary Architecture (Croatia), the Belgrade Architects Society (Serbia), and the Coalition for Sustainable Development (Former Republic of Macedonia). Their goal is to research and disseminate knowledge about the production and use of the built environment in South Eastern Europe and to foster trans-national collaboration and mobility of architects, planners, artists, and urban activists, within the region and in the broader European context.
Since 2008 TrajekT has been working on the project PoLok with partners Institute for Spatial Policies, and the Community-Based Natural Resource Management Network (CBNRM Net). The aim of the project is to bring together people that participate actively in the creation of inhabitant-friendly neighbourhoods. The project is supported by a grant through the EEA Financial Mechanism (supported by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.
