ART CIRCLE International Visual Arts Festival was founded in 2011 in the Goriška region and was from the outset conceived as a visual arts festival and art residency programme, connecting artistic creation with the local environment, cultural heritage and international collaboration. It gradually evolved into an international platform hosting artists from numerous countries. A distinctive feature of the festival is the concept of “cultural embassies”, specific residencies dedicated to individual countries, developed in collaboration with diplomatic representations, cultural institutions and other partners.

Residency programme

Artists-in-residence are accommodated in high-standard, comfortable lodging in Goriška Brda, the Vipava Valley, Nova Gorica, the Karst region and Italian border villages. The studios are equipped with basic technical equipment and tools that enable work in drawing, painting and small-scale installations. If needed, artists-in-residence may, by agreement, use additional materials and specialised equipment provided by the festival or local partners. The residency programme also covers accommodation and meals. In addition, it provides travel subsidies for selected international artists and, by agreement, may offer stipends to support creative work.

Candidates can apply through a special open call several times a year and are selected by an international expert committee. The duration of the residency is between one week and two months. During the residency, the artists are expected to take part in networking and public activities such as exhibitions, open studios and workshops and to create a finished artwork that becomes part of the ART CIRCLE collection and is subsequently presented at the festival’s exhibitions both in Slovenia and abroad.
