The Municipality of Metlika covers a total area of 109 square kilometres and has a population of 8,059 people (2002) living in 59 settlements.

The Social Activities Department of Metlika Municipality is responsible for social and health care, education, sports and cultural activities, including cultural heritage preservation and amateur activities.

Cultural venues and activities

The main cultural institutions in Metlika are the regional Bela krajina Museum and the Metlika People’s Library.

The local branches of the Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia (ZKDS) and the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia (JSKD) facilitate the activities of local amateur cultural organisations.
