Artists-in-residence opportunities in Slovenia

Over the past decades, arts residencies (AiR) have become a vital component of the contemporary art ecosystem, significantly contributing to the development of artistic practices. As organised temporal and spatial opportunities for artists and other cultural professionals to focus on research or production, they also foster exchange between residents and the environments in which they work.

Slovene AiR programmes take place in diverse settings – from rural areas to urban centres – and are run by both independent organisations and public institutions. They differ in scale, duration and disciplinary focus: some are dedicated to literature or animation, while others are multidisciplinary. AiR programmes may be accessed through open calls or by invitation and they vary in terms of financial support, working conditions and expectations regarding public presentations or final outcomes.

Beyond offering accommodation and workspace, AiR programmes in Slovenia foster dialogue, collaboration and community engagement, connecting international and local artists with cultural organisations and audiences, and enriching the Slovene cultural landscape. Explore the variety of AiR opportunities active in Slovenia today.

Švicarija Art Centre

Occupying the premises of a renovated, early 20th-century hotel, Švicarija Art Centre is a newly established arts venue in Ljubljana. Opening its doors in May 2017, it is managed by the International Centre of Graphic Arts, situated in its immediate vicinity – in the very heart of Ljubljana's Tivoli Park.

Set out to be a multi-purpose venue, Švicerija – with its 2 living and 3 residency apartments alongside a dozen production spaces – is foremost meant for resident and visiting artists. However, there is also an exhibition space as well as a cafeteria.

Asylum Studio

The Asylum Studio (Atelje Azil) is at once an artist-in-residence programme and the actual space where this programme is held. Located at the autonomous cultural centre Metelkova mesto and run by KUD Mreža Arts and Culture Association, the studio has been functioning since 2006. It is located in the attic of the building called Hlev, and is divided into a living and working space, with the latter sometimes also becoming a performing and exhibiting site.
