The year 2026 marks the centenary of the deaths of two significant Slovenian writers: the writer and women' s rights advocate Zofka Kveder (1878–1926) and the Slovenian poet Srečko Kosovel (1904–1926). To commemorate these anniversaries, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia has officially declared 2026 the year of the two writers.

Initiators

The proposal to declare 2026 the year of Srečko Kosovel was put forward by the Municipality of Sežana and supported by the Slovene Writers’ Association. The initiative to declare 2026 the year of Zofka Kveder came from the City of Women Association for Promotion of Women in Culture.

The centenary commemorations of Kveder’s death include an international symposium in Nova Gorica in September, a new scholarly monograph, and an exhibition on Kveder at the Slovenian Theatre Institute, as well as the first ever staging of her play ‘’Pravica do življenja’’ (The Right to Live) at the Prešeren Theatre Kranj. Events dedicated to Kveder are also taking place in Prague and Zagreb.
