Emzin Magazine Photography of the Year Competition
The Emzin Magazine Photography of the Year Competition initially called Photography of the Year Competition is an annual Slovene photography project, organised by Emzin Institute of Creative Production since 1993.
A jury of experts presents three awards for art photography and one for reportage, and selects the entrants' finest works for exhibition. The call for submissions to the competition is announced in November and is open to amateur as well as professional Slovene photographers of different generations who deal with various contents, formats, and techniques. The winning photographs and a selection of other entries are exhibited in the first floor foyer of the Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre usually in February and March.
The interest for the 16th edition of the Emzin Magazine Photography of the Year Competition in 2010 beat all predecessors: 540 portfolios (which amounted to 3164 photos) arrived on the call for submissions, nearly 30 % more as in 2005. The 2010 jury was comprised of AP photographer Darko Bandic, Magnum Agency photographer Antoine D’Agata, EMZIN director Metka Dariš, curator at Museum of Architecture and Design Cvetka Požar, and photographer Klavdij Sluban.
Award recipients in 2010 included Maja Alič (first prize) who participated in the competition for the first time and enraptured the jury with an opus of self-portraits, Jaka Babnik (second prize) for the opus We are dogs, Branko Blaž Lesjak (third prize) a photography student in Belgrade. For the best reportage in 2010 Manja Zore was bestowed for the series Rheumatism [Revma]. Alongside the winning works, the Emzin Magazine Photography Competition exhibition featured 41 photographers.
