The Podčetrtek Castle is situated on top of the hill above Podčetrtek in the Savinja region. It was first mentioned in written sources in 1261 under the name of castrum Lansperch. The original castle building dated from the Romanesque period but it was completely demolished in the war with the Hungarians in the 15th century and was subsequently rebuilt. In the early 16th century, the castle was briefly captured in the Slovenian Peasant Revolt of 1515. Among its later owners, the most significant for its present day appearance was the noble Attems family that renovated the castle in the Baroque style. After World War II, the castle fell into disrepair until a major renovation project began after 2020.

Renovations

In 2020, the Municipality of Podčetrtek became the sole owner of the castle and started a thorough renovation that resulted in the castle reopening to the general public in the summer of 2024. As part of the renovation, a viewing platform was built on the flat roof of the castle, offering visitors a new experience of virtual and real view of the Obsotelje and Kozjansko landscapes. In addition, the castle’s programme was expanded to include an interactive experience depicting medieval trials called Thursday’s Judgment, an observatory with a movable interactive screen, a responsive observatory and two tourist products: a castle banquet and castle wedding.

Further renovations began in the summer of 2025, focusing on the entrance and inner courtyard, the access corridor in front of the chapel, and rooms on the first floor. Upon completion, the castle will also feature a museum exhibition of historic artefacts and a library providing access to the collection of Professor Jože Krašovec. The castle courtyard will serve as a venue for concerts, theatre performances and other cultural events. Various new cultural and touristic experiences are also currently in development.
