The first two competitions (2001 and 2004) were organized within the annual summer academy of chamber music Musical July on the Coast which was maintained by Koper Music School. In 2007 the competition changed its location to Ljubljana Vič-Rudnik Music School and its name to Primož Ramovš Competition for Chamber Music Groups. The 4th Primož Ramovš competition was organised under the auspices of Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia) and the Society of Slovene Composers in Ljubljana Music and Ballet Conservatory in 2012. Its artistic director has always been Tomaž Lorenz.
The competition is today run in three age categories: up to the average age of 20, 25 or 30 years. Each category has two obligatory pieces – one work of Slovenian artist and a work of world literature.
