About
Koper Theatre annually presents a programme of around six premières, which include stagings of classical texts as well as contemporary dramatic texts. Some of theatre's stagings include first Slovene presentations of newest dramatic works by national and foreign authors, such as Jeroen van den Berg's Blowing [Podžig] (2009) and Fausto Paravidino's La malattia della famiglia M [Bolezen familije M] (2010). The programme also includes dramatisations of Slovene novels and a number of successful stagings of comedy works: Divorce Agency [Agencija za ločitve] (2001), directed by Katja Pegan, Duohtar pod mus!, directed by Vito Taufer and co-produced with Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Nova Gorica, the first staging of Desa Muck's Christmas Evening [Božični večer] (2008), etc. The theatre also produces performances for children and youth, often marked by employing different art genres and media, such as Zlatko Krilić's The Egg [Jajce] (2007), The Girl Behind the Mirror [Deklica za ogledalom] (2009), directed by Yulia Roschina, the dance fairy tale Beauty and the Beast [Lepotica in zver] (2008), etc.
The theatre's productions regularly appear at Slovene theatre festivals and have received awards at the Days of Comedy festival in Celje, Borštnik Meeting Festival, and at the Slovene Festival of Chamber Theatre (SKUP) in Ptuj. Although the theatre's ensemble comprises mainly guest actors, the artists often receive awards for their achievements in Koper Theatre productions. Koper Theatre also hosts several performances by Ljubljana City Theatre (MGL), Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Nova Gorica, Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Drama, Špas Theatre, Prešeren Theatre Kranj, and others, as well as enters a number of co-productions with these theatres.
Koper Theatre takes part in producing the Primorska Summer Festival, Koper-Capodistria and the Slovene Puppetry Biennial. Together with Obalne galerije - Coastal Galleries it publishes the Gledga Magazine on cultural events in the city. The company has recently begun co-operating with Avditorij Portorož (see Portorož Auditorium) and with the University of Primorska.
In 2009 the building of Koper Theatre was renovated in the frame of the project Cultural Revival of City Core, funded through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, as part of the effort to promote economic and social cohesion in the EU member states.
