Kunigunda Festival of Young Cultures was launched in 2000 by Velenje Youth Centre (MC Velenje) in co-operation with Šaleški študentski klub (the local student club). The main purpose of the festival is to provide a platform for current happenings in the field of non-commercial arts and culture, with emphasis on the promotion of younger Slovene artists. The programme is conceptually wide and diverse, comprising music, modern dance, theatre, puppetry, sculptural installations, documentary film and video screenings, literary evenings, intermedia events, lectures and art auctions. Festival venues are mainly open-air but also include Velenje Castle and Velenje Youth Centre (MC Velenje).
The 2005 programme included the NOVA Big Band from Nova Gorica, which performed at the Max Club, accompanied by Nuša Derenda, Darja Švajger, Alenka Godec and Oto Pestner. A rockabilly and hardcore punk concert featuring Duo Digger & the Pussycats from Australia was staged in the Youth Centre hall. The closing concert was by the Primorje-based swing-ska and reggae music band The Pokerheads, which attracted a packed house.
Kunigunda Festival of Young Cultures is the only festival in the region.
