The Department of Asian and African Studies at the Faculty of Arts was established in 1995 when Dr. Andrej Bekeš, Dr. Jana S. Rošker, and Dr. Mitja Saje were among the first research Japonologists and Sinologists who were ready to make further steps in the research fields at the University. The first study programme has adapted to the new reforms, currently the study programmes offer a BSc in Japanology, a BSc in Sinology and in The Cultures of East Asia. All of them are three-year undergraduate study programmes; MA courses are due to begin in the near future.

The staff of the Department are engaged in several research projects, eg Text and context: a comparative study of discourse particles and related phenomena in Japanese and Slovene. The Department has an agreement on collaboration and exchange with the College of Japanese Language and Culture, University of Tsukuba. A similar agreement with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Informatics of Gunma University started in April 2000. In the field of Sinology there is a student and material exchange with Chengdu University, Normal University of Jinan in China, and Xinzhu University in Taiwan. The Department organises international symposia on East Asian cultures in Slovenia (in 2006 the XVIth Biennial Conference of the European Association of Chinese Studies (EACS) was held in Ljubljana) and participates in conferences on Japanese language teaching in Europe, and conferences of the European Association for Japanese Studies and of the European Association for Chinese Studies. The Department also organises one-month Slovene language and culture seminars for Japanese university students, Japanese film shows and other events related to Japanese culture, and guided tours to exhibitions and cultural events in neighbouring countries. Excursions to China are organised every summer, with the possibility of attending summer courses at Jinan and Chengdu Universities in China. Two-month courses in Chinese language and Buddhism in Taiwan are offered by the Buddhist Society of Taiwan.

The Department has its own library:
