The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington is the official representative body of the Slovene Government in the United States of America. Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, D.C. is also accredited for United Mexican States.

The consular assistance is provided also by the consulates of the Republic of Slovenia in the USA. In 2012 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted the decision on the closure of the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in New York and its tasks since November 2012 have been assumed by the Embassy in Washington.


Cultural cooperation

The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington participates in the organisation of a range of cultural events, indicated in the weekly Embassy's Newsletter.

Among some traditional annual events are the Small Nations Poetry Reading which brings together the ambassadors of ten countries: Austria, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, and Slovenia, or the widely visited EU Open House event programme. The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Washington was one of the founding members of the EUNIC Washington cluster which was created in March of 2011 in order to promote contemporary European culture.

At a few festivals of European film that take place in the US (Washington, New York, Chicago, Silver Spring) Slovene feature films by Damjan Kozole, Vlado, Škafar and Nejc Gazvoda were presented, supported by the Slovenian Film Centre.


Heritage

In 2009 the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution, the largest institution in the cultural field in the USA as well as the largest museum complex and conservation centre in the world. The cooperation is focused on sharing common interests and knowledge and training new specialists. The Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of New York are among the partners in the international cooperative project Identification of Wood and Dendrocronology.
