In 2009 the [[Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage]] signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution, the largest institution in the cultural field in the USA as well as the largest museum complex and conservation centre in the world. The cooperation is focused on sharing common interests and knowledge and training new specialists. The Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of New York are among the partners in the international cooperative project Identification of Wood and Dendrocronology.

The first Slovenian immigrants should arrive to the United States in the late 1700s, while most intensive Slovene migration to USA took place in the 19th Century, the first decades of 20th Century, and after the Second World War. Nowadays majority of Slovenian descents (the 90% already born in the USA) live in Ohio (49.598), Pennsylvania (14.584), Illinois (11.743), Minnesota (6.614), Wisconsin (6.478) and California.

The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, D.C. is the official representative body of the Slovene Government in the United States of America. The embassy is also accredited for United Mexican States.

The consular assistance is provided also by the consulates of the Republic of Slovenia in the USA. In 2012 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted the decision on the closure of the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in New York and its tasks since November 2012 have been assumed by the Embassy in Washington.


Cultural cooperation
