The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, D.C. is the official representative body of the Slovene Government in the United States of America. The embassy is also accredited for United Mexican States.

The consular assistance is provided also by the consulates of the Republic of Slovenia in the USA. In 2012 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted the decision on the closure of the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in New York and its tasks since November 2012 have been assumed by the Embassy in Washington.


Cultural cooperation

The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington every year organizes a range of cultural events, indicated in the weekly Embassy's Newsletter. Premises of the embassy include a spacious reception hall, which also serves as a gallery space and a concert room. Anja Bukovec, Miha Alujević, Artvento quintet, Sabina Cvilak, Andrej Goričar, Matej Grahek, Mak Grgić, Meta Grgurević/Jaša Mrevlje/Luka Uršič, Bogdan Grom, Arne Hodalič, Stane Jeršič and Barbara Jakše Jeršič, Barbara Jernejčič Fürst and Žarko Ignjatović, Manca Juvan, Boštjan Korošec, Jiři Kočica, Lučka Koščak, Vlado Kreslin, Nejc Kuhar, Tone Kuntner, Mojca Majcen, Megaron Chamber Choir, Octet9, Nataša Prosenc, 4Saxess quartet, Zora Stančič and Tanja Radež, JOže Svetina, Ejti Štih, Jaka Vinšek, Zagreb Saxophone Quartet, Zvone Žigon and Dragan Živadinov are some of the artists that performed or exhibited at the embassy.

Networking (EU)

Embassy of Slovenia in Washington D.C. also participates in annual cultural events organized in cooperation with Delegation of the European Union in Washington, D.C. other EU member states’ embassies, non EU embassies, consulates, non governmental and non profit organizations, universities and cultural institutes. Most distinguished partners include Embassy Series, The Kennedy Center, U.S. Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art and Phillips Collection. La Grande Fête de la Francophonie in March, EU Open House in May, EuroNight in September, Euro Kids Festival in October and November, AFI – EU Film Showcase in December, Panorama Europe Film Festival in April (both film festivals are supported by the Slovenian Film Centre), and Small Nations Poetry Reading are some of the traditional annual events.

The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Washington is a member of the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC): the EUNIC Washington cluster and the EUNIC New York cluster, both dedicated to promote contemporary European culture in the U.S..

Slovenian community in the US

The first Slovenian immigrants should arrive to the United States in the late 1700s, while most intensive Slovene migration to USA took place in the 19th Century, the first decades of 20th Century, and after the Second World War. Nowadays majority of Slovenian descents (the 90% already born in the USA) live in Ohio (49.598), Pennsylvania (14.584), Illinois (11.743), Minnesota (6.614), Wisconsin (6.478) and California.
