The award is named after two great Slovene dramaturgs, essayists, theatre theoreticians, and founders of modern institutional dramaturgy in Slovenia, namely Herbert Grün (1925–1961) and Lojze Filipič (1921–1975). Until 2003, the award was delivered every third year, since then it is awarded every second year by a jury of Slovene theatre practitioners and experts.
The 2009 recipient of the special mention is the dramaturg Mojca Kranjc, a long-time collaborator of Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Drama.
