Established in 1988, the Jakopič Gallery was until 2004 managed by the former Architecture Museum of Ljubljana. Since 2007 is managed by the Ljubljana Urban Municipality, which renovated and re-opened the exhibition space. Since Ljubljana Urban Municipality's cultural development plans for 2008–2011 merged the City Museum of Ljubljana and the City Art Museum Ljubljana into a new public institute the City Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, the Jakopič Gallery is managed by them.

After 2008 this underground space on Slovenska 9 is again part of the vital programme of contemporary art practices in Ljubljana, which is as a rule produced in the cooperation with other national and international partners. In the period after the reopening the space until 2010 it offered 12 projects.

As an underground space it was restructured to hold a broad range of exhibitions, primarily of architecture, design, photography, and new media, but also painting, sculpture and graphic art. It also features the Mali Salon (small salon) for small individual or specialised presentations of art works and other cultural events, round table discussions and public presentations.

Exhibitions presented here cover different art genres and are organised by a broad range of institutions. Regular events include exhibitions by the Brumen Foundation, Architects' Society of Ljubljana (DAL), Slovene Designers Society, Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU) and the International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana.
