Melodies of the Sea and Sun, [Melodije morja in sonca], was launched in 1978 in the costal town of Piran. Similarly to Slovenska popevka festival, it is a competition of newly composed popular music of that time, but ones that were lyrically more focused on the themes of summer, the sea and the like.

While the first edition was held in Piran, the festival was later more or less staged at the Portorož Auditorium, which is in recent years organising the festival together with Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia), which also takes care of the live television transmission.
