Named after Rihard Jakopič, an important Slovene impressionist painter who worked at the beginning of the 20th century, the Rihard Jakopič Award is the highest award in the field of fine arts in Slovenia. Since 1969 it is bestowed annually to a Slovene artist, member of Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU), who lives and works in Slovenia or abroad. The artist is prized for his/her life opus or the artistic achievements of last 5 years.

Candidates may be nominated by a cultural institution, by a fine arts association, by the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), by the Ministry of Culture, or by an individual.

The winner is selected by a special Board consisting each year out of new members from four institutions (two from each): Museum of Modern Art, Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU), and the Associations of Slovene Art Critics.

The artist is prized by remuneration and the solo exhibition in one of esteemed galleries in Ljubljana.
