In 2009 a Union of Slovene Public Libraries was closed and a new organisation, Slovenian Public Libraries Association, was established to represent various interests of Slovene public libraries in the field of policy, strategies and management.

The association initiates common projects aimed at facilitating better co-operation and information exchange among the 58 public libraries that play an important role as local cultural and information centres.

A notable project is also a regional libraries portal Kamra.si, initiated in 2004.
