Tobačna 001 is a new cultural centre in Ljubljana, featuring the Tobacco Museum, a residency programme for international visual artists, and Gallery 001. It opened its door in 2011 with the newly designed permanent display of the Tobacco Museum.

The centre is run by the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana and is situated in the former Tobacco Factory (Tobačna), a vast Tobačna City (Tobačna mesto) architectural and urbanistic project.

Visual arts residency

The 2-month residency programme was conceived by Alenka Gregorič, the artistic director of the City Art Gallery Ljubljana, and is dedicated to international artists. They are offered a stipend, a flat, and a working space within the Tobačna 001 Cultural Centre premises. The residential programme is flexible as it allows the artists to decide whether to engage with the local community or concentrate on their own research and artistic work.

The list of artists-in-residence since April 2011 includes: Dušica Dražić, Katarina Zdjelar, Justyna Koeke, Alban Muja, James Powderly & Eun-Jung Son, Ed Atkins, Efrat Vital, Vahram Aghsyan, Ibro Hasanović, Nemanja Cvijanović, Avi Pitchon, Maria Papadomanolaki, Anna Friz, Qëndresë Deda, Ovidiu Anton, and Lala Raščić.

Gallery 001

The brand new gallery opened in March 2011 with an exhibition by Jan Fabre (partly on display also at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana), focusing on his drawings and photographs of the performances by Helmut Newton and Robert Mapplethorpe. The exhibitions accompanied the 17th Exodos Festival, curated by Jan Fabre.

The next exhibition accompanied the Delak Institute's ongoing project dealing with the Slovene historical avant-garde and its inclusion in the official national art history. The exhibition presented the original documents and publications from an Italian private collection and a reprint of the January 1929 issue of the German magazine Der Sturm, entirely dedicated to the "Junge Slowenische Kunst", the Slovene avant-garde artists such as (Ferdo Delak, Avgust Černigoj, Ivan Čargo, Anton Podbevšek, Srečko Kosovel, Marij Kogoj, Slavko Osterc, and Ivo Spinčič.

The Gallery 001, however, also regularly showcases the work by the artists in the Tobačna 001 Cultural Centre residencies.
