Škrateljc – Institute for Culture, Education and Sport was founded in 2015 to encourage participation in culture, promote outdoor activities and to develop products in the field of creative tourism. Although its activities are quite diverse, one of its core activities is publishing, primarily children’s literature that often features dwarfs (“škrateljc” is a Slovenian word for a dwarf), fairies, giants, goblins and other mythical beings. Many of the institute’s books are connected to family adventure trails across Slovenia that help children and their parents explore nature and cultural heritage.

Among the institute’s publications one can also find several graphic novels, for instance a novel about the life and work of the celebrated Slovenian poet Srečko Kosovel or another inspired by Pod svobodnim soncem, a well-known historical novel by the writer Fran Saleški Finžgar. In addition to publishing and several other support activities, the institute also organizes various children events for schools, kindergartens and other institutions.
