Established in 2001 by the Student Organisation of the University of Maribor, Litera Publishing House aims to develop publishing activity in eastern Slovenia and promote outstanding original and translated literature. Litera has launched a series of quality publishing programmes based on criteria such as contemporary relevance, originality, and aesthetics, alongside exclusively literary and local history publications. Works published by Litera have received a number of awards and nominations.

In addition to book publishing, Litera also organises literary events, book presentations, meetings with authors, and literary workshops. Litera books have been presented at international book fairs in Ljubljana, Frankfurt, Prague, Belgrade, Pula, and Tuzla.

Programme

Litera's book series include: Piramida (contemporary Slovene literature), Babilon (contemporary world literature), Nova znamenja (humanities), Mladež (youth literature), Vedute (contemporary poetry), and From the antique world. Before SAZU took over the publication, Litera also published the series Collected Works of Slovene Poets and Prose Writers.

From 2003 to 2005 Litera co-organised the traditional Herberstein Literary Meeting of Slovene Writers, and between 2007 and 2012 the literary-music festival Spogledi.
