Viva, the Zagorje Youth Wind Orchestra, was founded in 1992 at Zagorje Music School by conductor and teacher Drago Peterlin in order to promote young musicianship. It comprises around 80 musicians and has given several radio and television performances at venues throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and the USA. The wind orchestra also performs at venues throughout Slovenia, including the Slovene Philharmonic Halls in Ljubljana. It was awarded golden medals at international music competitions in Germany in 1998, in Hungary in 1998, and in Italy in 1997 and 2000.

International recognition

The town Zagorje, situated in central Slovenia, was the home town of the world renowned conductor Carlos Kleiber, who visited the orchestra's rehearsal in 1997. The world-famous virtuoso flute player James Galway paid a visit to the orchestra in 1996. The orchestra has performed in Hartberg, Graz, Tieschen, Voelkermarkt (Austria); Livorno, Riva del Garda, Azzano Deccimo (Italy); Ostrava (Czech Republic); Larvik (Norway); and Chicago (USA). The orchestra has successfully presented Slovene musical culture around the world with performances which include Slovene musical works. In Chicago, Viva played with two well-known Slovene soloists: clarinettist, member of the Slovene Clarinet Sextet and Ariart Woodwind Quintet, and teacher at the Zagorje Music School, Jože Kotar and flautist and member of the MD7 Contemporary Music Ensemble, Matej Zupan. The Zagorje Youth Wind Orchestra took part in the 47th International Summer Festival in Križanke (Ljubljana) and in the 53rd Annual Midwest Clinic Conference in Chicago in 1999.

Repertoire

To date Viva has produced four CDs. One of the CDs features the orchestra's live performance at the Midwest Clinic gathering in Chicago. The orchestra's repertoire includes arrangements of pop songs such as Sinatra's "My Way", Slovene folk songs and polkas, pieces from film soundtracks such as Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis, and some classical music works.
