Founded in 1974, the Ljubljana Fine Artists Society (DLUL) brings together individual artists and organises exhibitions for its members. The association is one of eight Slovene regional fine artists associations, which are all part of the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU).

The Ljubljana Fine Artists Society has about 400 members, including painters, sculptors, print artists, video artists, and photographers, all of them professional artists living and working in Ljubljana and south-eastern Slovenia. In order to become a member one has to prove one's professional qualifications and quality artistic activity.

Background

After World War II the Slovenian Society of Artists was re-established with Božidar Jakac as its first president. It was based in Ljubljana and included Maribor's subcommittee. In 1974 the society was decentralised and more associations were established and integrated in the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU)) with Ljubljana Fine Artists Society (DLUL) becoming one of them.

Exhibitions

The society runs an exhibition programme at various sites in the city of Ljubljana, including the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU) Gallery and the ZDSLU Garden Gallery at Komenskega 8, the Pentagonal Tower at Ljubljana Castle, Jožef Stefan Institute Gallery, etc. DLUL organises around 12 exhibitions every year and also participates in the Museums Summer Night.

Examples of solo exhibitions in recent years include: Nuša Lapajne Čurin, Prostorski sistemi in the Garden ZDSLU; Karel Zelenko's Theatrum mundi in Pentagonal Tower at Ljubljana Castle; Transformers, drawings by Zvonko Čoh and Milan Erič in Ljubljana Castle; and The Medium and Large Statue, a memorial exhibition of France Rotar's work in Ljubljana Castle.

International cooperation

Move Moment was DLUL's exhibition prepared in honour of the opening of the newly renovated Slovenian Embassy in Washington in 2007. It included works by 24 artist including Jurij Dobrila, Secret B 45; Dušan Kirbiš, Hi sol; Damjan Kracina, Devonian Future; Tobias Putrih, QR/S/O REFLEX; and Zora Stančič, In the Mood for Art. Since then the exhibition was displayed in Cleveland, Chicago, Miami, Ottawa, and Toronto, as well as in the Historical Atrium in Ljubljana's Town Hall in 2010.

For the occasion of the World Book Capital Ljubljana 2010 DLUL prepared the exhibition Ex-libris linking books and fine arts in the Pentagon tower at the Ljubljana Castle. It was curated by Jadranka Ljubičič and included ex-libris designs made especially for the event.

In 2009 the exhibition Art Fetish took place in the ZDSLU Gallery curated by Nadja Zgonik. A solo exhibition of paintings by Viktor Bernik and a photographic exhibition entitled From the Family Album were also presented in Pentagonal Tower. The exhibition was curated by Meta Krese and included in the Ljubljana Festival.

Other activities

Some events are initiated by individual members of the association such as the sculptural colony in Vrhnika in 2010. Some members exhibited their work as part of Cultural Week 2011 in Stockholm organised by the Association of Swedish-Slovenian Friendship.

DLUL leads excursions for its members to see foreign exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale as well as organises other activities like art workshops for children. It informs its members about important cultural events and calls for solo or group exhibitions, as well as gives them a possibility to advertise their work by posting links of their web pages or announcements of their exhibitions.

One of the Ljubljana Fine Artists Society's current ambitions is to establish a quality and organised presence of the association and its members on the Internet. It also participates in the process of the reorganisation of the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU).
