The Slovene Writers' Association Residency Programme was set up in 2015, first at the Šiška quarter. Later on they set up the Dane Zajc Writers’ Studio on Praprotnikova Street in Prule. The residency programme hosts each year up to 12 authors from abroad to work 4 weeks in the studio apartment. Eligible are writers or translators (into Slovenian) with at least two published works. The selected residents have their living expenses covered.

The Dane Zajc Writers’ Studio

The apartment on Praprotnikova Street (a 10 minute walk from the city centre) measures around 50 square meters, and comprises two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and an enclosed glass balcony. The studio got its name and hold some traces of the former tenant, the poet Dane Zajc, who was living and working here for some years at the end of his life.

Dane Zajc (1929–2015) is considered to be one of Slovenia’s most significant poets of the 20th century and one of Slovenia’s central playwright figures. He made his debut in 1958 with a collection of neo-expressionist poetry Požgana trava (Burnt Grass). He published nine more volumes of poetry, and also made his name as a writer of lyrical drama.

Application

The open call for the applications is usually published in early autumn. Applications must be submitted in Slovenian, English or Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian. The applicants should submit a CV and a short project proposal with a preferred month of the residence.
