The city of Maribor won the prestigeous title of the European Capital of Culture in 2008 with an ambitious regional proposal that mobilised five partner cities in Slovenia (Murska Sobota, Ptuj, Slovenj Gradec, Novo mesto and Velenje).

Infrastructural investments

The seat of the Maribor 2012 Public Institute is situated in the recently renovated Naskov Mansion in the very heart of the city. For the renovation the architects Maruša Zorec and Matjaž Bolčina won the 2010 Piranesi Award.

For the year 2012 the City of Maribor gives the primate to the new Maribor Cultural Centre (MAKS) or Terminal 12, which is to be erected on the grounds of the former knitting factory in the Studenci area. The plans for this edifice with the two multi-purpose halls for 650 visitors each were made by the Sadar-Vuga Arhitekti.

Programme

The programme of the Cultural Capital highlights the performances by the so-called Maribor Directing School (Tomaž Pandur, Jernej Lorenci, Matjaž Latin, and Sebastijan Horvat) in the MAKS Centre. It will, however, also include the inventive urban projects such as "social ecology" or "militant research" in the suburbs and the new set up of the permanent collection in the Maribor Regional Museum.

The partner cities have already announced some of the highlights in their programmes. The Ptuj Regional Museum prepares the fourth World Congress of Archaeologists. Slovenj Gradec plans the opening of the museum and documentation centre of the Austrian composer Hugo Wolf and an ambitious performance based on his lieder, accompanied by the first international workshop on classical solo singing. The city will produce also the Peace Festival From People to the People and collaborate with the Herman Potočnik Noordung Memorial Centre in Vitanje on the contemporary visual arts production.
