The Forth Tunnel, a joint exhibition by members of the Ljubljana Fine Artists Association: Polona Demšar, Blanka Stepančič Dobrila, Nina Zelenko, Svetlana Jakimovska Rodić, Jozef Vrščaj and Jurij Dobrila
Ljubljana Fine Artists Association has about 400 members, including painters, sculptors, print artists, video artists and photographers, all of them professional artists living and working in Ljubljana and South Eastern Slovenia. In order to become a member one has to prove professional qualifications and quality artistic activity.
Background
After the world war II the Slovenian Society of Artists was re-established with Božidar Jakac as its first president. It was based in Ljubljana and included Maribor's subcommittee. In 1974 the society was decentralized and more associations were established and integrated in the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU) with Ljubljana Fine Artists Association (DLUL) becoming one of them.
Exhibitions
The society runs an exhibition programme at various sites in the city of Ljubljana, including the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU) Gallery, the Pentagonal Tower at Ljubljana Castle, Institute of Jožef Štefan Gallery etc. DLUL organizes around 12 exhibitions every year.
Solo exhibitions in 2011 include Nuša Lapajne Čurin: Prostorski sistemi in the Garden ZDSLU, Karel Zelenko: Theatrum mundi in Pentagonal Tower at Ljubljana Castle, drawings by Zvonko Čoh and Milan Erič: Transformers in Ljubljana Castle and a memorial exhibition France Rotar: The medium and large Statue in Ljubljana Castle. Every year there is also an exhibition opening on the museum summer night. In 2011 it was PREHOD - ITI in the Garden ZDSLU at Komenskega 8.
Move Moment was DLUL's exhibition prepared in honour of the opening of the newly renovated Slovenian Embassy in Washingtion in 2007. It included works by 24 artist including Jurij Dobrila: Secret B 45, Dušan Kirbiš: Hi sol, Damjan Kracina: Devonian future, Tobias Putrih: QR/S/O REFLEX and Zora Stančič: In the mood for art. Since than the exhibition was on display in Cleveland, Chicago, Ottawa, Toronto, Miami and in The Historical Atrium in Ljubljana's Town Hall in 2010. The same year DLUL prepared an exhibition linking books and fine arts Ex-libris in connection with the title World Book Capital that Ljubljana gained in 2010. The exhibition in Pentagon tower was curated by Jadranka Ljubičič and included ex-libris designs made specially for the occasion. In 2009 there was an exhibition Art Fetish in The Gallery ZDSLU curated by Nadja Zgonik. In Pentagonal Tower there was a solo exhibition of paintings by Viktor Bernik and a photographic exhibition entitled From the Family Album. The exhibition was curated by Meta Krese and included in the Ljubljana Festival.
Other activities
There are events initiated by individual members of the association such as sculptural colony in Vrhnika in 2010. Some members exhibited their work as part of Cultural week 2011 in Stockholm organized by the Association of Swedish-Slovenian Friendship.
DLUL organizes excursions to see foreign exhibitions such as Venice biennial and organizes or initiates other activities like art workshops for children. It informs its members about important cultural events, calls for solo or group exhibitions and gives them a possibility to advertise their work by posting links of their web pages or announcements of their exhibitions. Ljubljana Fine Artists Association's current ambition is to establish a quality and organized presence of the association and its members in the virtual space of Internet. It also participates in the process of the reorganization of the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU).
